Starter won't crank — what it may mean

If the engine doesn't turn at all when you turn the key or press Start, or you only hear a click, the cause is usually the power supply to the starter circuit — the battery, connections or the starter itself.

Possible causes

  • Deeply discharged battery
  • Loose or corroded terminals
  • Faulty starter solenoid
  • Worn starter brushes or armature
  • Gear selector or clutch pedal switch fault

What you can safely check yourself

  • Whether the dashboard lights go out when you try to start
  • That an automatic gearbox selector is in P or N
  • On a manual, that the clutch pedal is fully pressed

When to call a mechanic

Don't hit the starter or make temporary wire connections — it's dangerous and can damage electronics.

How MobilaisServiss can help

We measure battery voltage under load, check the connections and starter circuit, and tell you whether the battery or the starter needs replacing — so you don't pay for the wrong part.

This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. The exact cause can only be confirmed after inspecting the car.
