Vibration when braking — why the wheel or pedal shakes

If you feel the steering wheel or pedal shake when braking, especially from higher speed, the most common cause is unevenly worn or warped brake discs. Sometimes the suspension is involved too.

Possible causes

  • Uneven disc wear or warping
  • Sticking caliper overheating a disc
  • Worn suspension components
  • Incorrectly tightened wheel bolts

What you can safely check yourself

  • Whether the vibration is only when braking or also when driving steadily
  • Whether the steering wheel shakes (front discs) or the whole body
  • Whether one wheel is noticeably hotter after a drive

When to call a mechanic

Strong vibration increases braking distance. If it gets worse or comes with noises, have the brakes checked as soon as possible.
