Brakes squeaking or squealing — what it means
Noise when braking doesn't always mean a fault, but it shouldn't be ignored. It matters whether it's a high-pitched squeal, a brief squeak after rain, or harsh metallic grinding.
Possible causes
- Worn pads — many have a wear indicator that squeals
- Rust on the discs after standing or wet weather
- Dirt or grit between pad and disc
- Sticking caliper or slide pins
- Metal on metal when the pads are completely worn
What you can safely check yourself
- Whether the noise goes away after a few stops (rust)
- Whether it's constant or only when braking
- Whether the car pulls to one side when braking
When to call a mechanic
If you hear harsh metallic grinding, the brake pedal feels soft or the brake warning light is on, don't keep driving — call a mechanic.
How MobilaisServiss can help
We measure pad thickness, check discs and calipers, and replace pads and discs at your car if needed.
This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. The exact cause can only be confirmed after inspecting the car.
