Car won't start — possible causes and what to do
When a car won't start, the first step is to notice exactly what happens: the starter doesn't crank at all, cranks slowly, or cranks normally but the engine doesn't fire. Each symptom points to a different system.
Possible causes
- Flat or ageing battery
- Corroded battery terminals or a poor earth connection
- Faulty starter motor or starter relay
- Fuel supply or ignition problem
- Immobiliser or key recognition fault
What you can safely check yourself
- Whether dashboard lights and headlights are bright or dim
- Whether you hear a click, slow cranking or nothing when turning the key
- That there is fuel in the tank and the key fob battery isn't flat
When to call a mechanic
If the car still won't start after simple checks, don't keep cranking — it drains the battery and can damage the starter. Don't work on the fuel system yourself.
How MobilaisServiss can help
A mechanic comes to your car, tests the battery, charging and starter, and where possible starts the car or repairs it on site. Daily call-outs in Riga and the surrounding area, elsewhere in Latvia by arrangement.
This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. The exact cause can only be confirmed after inspecting the car.
