Oil warning light on — what to do and how often to change oil
The red oil pressure light is one of the most serious dashboard warnings — the engine may not be getting enough lubrication. A yellow oil level warning usually means oil needs topping up or changing.
Possible causes
- Oil level too low
- Oil leak
- Oil pump or pressure sensor problem
- Old oil or a clogged filter
What you can safely check yourself
- On level ground and with the engine cooled, check the level with the dipstick
- Whether there are oil stains under the car
- When the oil was last changed — the manufacturer specifies the interval
When to call a mechanic
If the red oil pressure light comes on, stop safely as soon as possible and switch off the engine. Don't keep driving until the cause is known — it can seriously damage the engine.
