Check Engine light — what it means and what to do
The Check Engine light means the engine control unit has detected a fault. It can be minor — such as a loose fuel cap — or serious. You can't tell from the light alone.
Possible causes
- Oxygen (lambda) sensor fault
- Spark plug or ignition coil problem
- Exhaust system or catalytic converter fault
- Mass airflow sensor fault or intake leak
- Loose fuel cap
What you can safely check yourself
- Whether the light is steady or flashing
- Whether engine behaviour has changed — jerking, power loss
- Whether the fuel cap is properly tightened
When to call a mechanic
A flashing Check Engine light usually means a serious fault — reduce load and get the car checked immediately. A steady light should also be checked soon.
How MobilaisServiss can help
We read the fault codes at your car with computer diagnostics, explain what they mean and recommend next steps. We don't clear codes without fixing the cause.
This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. The exact cause can only be confirmed after inspecting the car.
