Car lacks power — why the engine has lost performance

Power loss can build up gradually or appear suddenly. When modern cars detect a fault they often enter limp mode, which deliberately limits power to protect the engine.

Possible causes

  • Clogged air or fuel filter
  • Turbocharger or turbo control problem
  • Blocked particulate filter or EGR valve (diesels)
  • Sensor fault triggering limp mode
  • Ignition system problem

What you can safely check yourself

  • Whether the Check Engine or another warning light is on
  • Whether the problem disappears after restarting the engine
  • Whether there are unusual noises or smoke from the exhaust

When to call a mechanic

If the car is in limp mode, drive gently and only to a safe place. If thick smoke comes from the exhaust or you smell burning, stop.

How MobilaisServiss can help

We read fault codes and engine data at your car, explain what they mean, and agree the repair before any work starts.

This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. The exact cause can only be confirmed after inspecting the car.
